At Hadeda, we’re constantly looking to personalise the shopping experience, which is why we decided to launch our made-to-order collection – Made For You – a celebration of slow, ethically produced and beautifully crafted design pieces. These artisan-made delights tell a story – of heritage, of culture, of one-of-a-kind wonders in a world geared towards mass production.
Highlighting the very best of African design, this will be a platform for makers and brands to showcase their high-end, slowly manufactured products and we’re so excited to announce our first partner, Coral & Hive.
The team of weavers lie at the heart of Coral & Hive, a Cape Town-based interiors brand loved for its perfectly imperfect rugs. These women deeply appreciate the art of weaving, using knowledge passed down through generations, keeping this beautiful craft alive. Owning one of the biggest looms in Africa, the team has become highly adept at customising rugs to any shape and size.
The Weavers & Their Weave
Each rug is a unique creation, lovingly crafted and touched by many hands. The process involves a medley of elements, from the ethical sourcing of local natural fibres, to artful design by the creative team in Cape Town and London, using large wooden looms in South Africa and India. In the Cape Town workshop, you’ll find some of Africa's most talented artisans spinning and weaving final creations by hand, finding a sense of connection, joy, hope and purpose in the process while singing stories into the fibres.
In India, Coral & Hive work with family-owned looms and weavers to offer creative freedom with the best natural Indian fibres, colours and weaving techniques. Everything from laidback flat weaves to luxurious silk and wool blends are made by these exceptional craftspeople.
The Materials
The African fibre rugs are made using pure karakul wool and mohair – ethically sourced from sheep and goats that graze freely under the African sun. Karakul wool is beautifully textured and naturally coated in lanolin, making it organic and durable. Mohair is a silky, sumptuous fibre that is soft to the touch. They then blend these fibres to create truly unique, textured living rugs. The Indian rugs are made from sustainably sourced jute, pure New Zealand wool, cotton and silk. In India they push the creative boundaries with unique fibre blends and designs, producing some of the most inspiring rugs in the collection.
How It Works
Coral & Hive have put together a distinct selection of rugs for Hadeda customers to choose from, in a range of three sizes, allowing you to pick the best dimensions for your space. Choose your favourite and add to cart, and then our design team will let you know how long it will take to produce.
